We hearof great tombs of various kings and emperors everywhere, but did you know these monumental tombs are called mausoleums because when Antipater of Sidon named the Mausoleum at Halicarnassus, one of the 7 wonders of the ancient world he also said that each tomb will be called so and Mausolo was the name of Halicarnassus governor
Halicarnassus was a city founded by the Dorians in a small regional kingdom in the coast of Asia Minor. Ruled by Mausolo V century BC, the death of himself, his wife Artemis II took office and ordered the city to build a monumental tomb to her late husband. Architects in charge of this work were Satyrs and Pittheus, who built a rectangular base. the building had Ionic order and was decorated by the best sculptors and artists of the time. The entire building was 50 feet high, covered in marble, with 117 columns in two rows holding its pyramidal roof, atop which stood a chariot sculpture.
The work was completed in 350 BC, 3 years after the death of Mausolus, and a year after his wife Artemis’ death. The Mausoleum overlooked the city of Halicarnassus for many years. It was untouched when the city fell to Alexander the Great in 334 BC and still undamaged after attacks by pirates in 62 and 58 BC. It stood above the city's ruins for sixteen centuries. Then a series of earthquakes shattered the columns. By 1404 AD only the very base of the Mausoleum was still recognizable.
Today, At the site of the Mausoleum itself, only the foundation remains, together with a small museum. Some of the surviving sculptures at the British Museum include fragment of statues and many slabs of the frieze showing the battle between the Greeks and the Amazons.
